Curriculum Overview
The curriculum at Parkwood is designed to be broad, engaging and exciting. It is responsive to our pupils and the community context. We aim for our pupils to be successful and independent learners who are well prepared for their future education and life in a rapidly changing world.
- Our curriculum is based on the national curriculum with a strong emphasis on reading. Subject-specific substantive and disciplinary content is taught sequentially, so that over time children know and remember more. Where appropriate, thematic links have been made between subjects. To provide a breadth of Cultural Capital, curriculum trips and hooks are an integral part of the curriculum; they are linked to ‘Parkwood’s Fantastic 50’. (download)
- Oracy skills are fundamental to success in both learning and life, and so Spoken language and dialogue run throughout the curriculum. Through a carefully planned approach, high-quality classroom talk supports children to articulate key ideas, consolidate their understanding, extend their vocabulary, and think deeply. We also provide varied opportunities for pupils to discuss, debate, and develop and challenge opinions.
- Developing the social and emotional skills of pupils is an important part of our curriculum. Using the ‘Zones of Regulation’ ensures that pupils at Parkwood are equipped with vital and transferrable skills such as self-regulation.
Effective Learners
The learning behaviors of curiosity, cooperation, resilience, and reflectiveness support our children to be self-motivated, adaptable, and responsible citizens who enjoy positive relationships. Through the deliberate teaching of these behaviors, we enable the pupils to become skilled and self-aware lifelong learners, who are well prepared for a rapidly changing world.
