History
Aims
Our history curriculum is designed to teach history and historical enquiry within a broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils will have a secure understanding of the context of chronology, relating to both Britain and the wider world. Our intention is that children learn both about, and from, history, developing curiosity and awareness of how History has been interpreted throughout time. Children will learn about historical periods, historical places, and people from the past. Through the study of historical evidence and exploration of our local area, pupils will develop a deep understanding of the rich history of our locality, Keighley. Perhaps more importantly, pupils will leave Parkwood with an awareness of current issues and how these will be viewed historically in later years.
Intent
Our children will have

An excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events, and contexts from a range of historical periods and of historical concepts and processes, both locally, nationally and internationally.

The ability to think critically about history and communicate these ideas confidently to a range of audiences.
-
The ability to support, evaluate and challenge their own and others’ views using historical evidence derived from a range of sources.
-
The ability to use their cognitive and oracy skills to evaluate the past, formulating and refining questions and lines of enquiry.
-
A passion for history and enthusiastically engage in learning, develop their sense of curiosity about the past and their understanding of how and why people interpret the past in different ways.
-
A respect for historical evidence and will make critical use of this to support their explanations and judgments.
-
Many opportunities to undertake high-quality research across a range of history topics throughout their time at Parkwood.
-
Assessment opportunities as an integral part of the teaching sequence to ensure that learning is purposeful. Assessment will be rigorous and consistent throughout school. Using the Rising Stars assessment objectives provided with each unit being taught.
Implementation
Here at Parkwood, we use the Rising Stars scheme of work to plan and teach the history curriculum throughout KS1 and KS2. This ensures that history is taught in a spiral manner, thus allowing children the opportunities to make connections, revise and recap previous learning. Resources and lessons provided are adapted by the class teachers to meet the needs of the pupils at Parkwood. Through robust teaching and learning we aim to develop a rich and connected knowledge of time and place when teaching our pupils about the history of their locality, making use of staff knowledge and expertise. Within EYFS, the teaching is tailored to the interests of the children and sits within the Understanding of the World section of Development Matters.
