Geography
Aims
Children at Parkwood Primary will develop a greater understanding of their place in the world and build knowledge of local, national as well as international environments including natural and human geographical features. Our geography curriculum has been developed to build children’s knowledge and skills beginning in EYFS and continuing throughout the primary years. Parkwood’s children will have a strong grasp of places and environments supported by their abilities to interpret maps as well as apply a range of investigative skills. Through our geography curriculum, all pupils will be empowered with the opportunities to understand and resolve issues concerning the environment and sustainable development.
Intent

Experience offsite learning to apply and develop fieldwork as well as other geographical skills.
-
Foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world in which they live and develop a sense of place.

-
Develop an understanding of environmental sustainability and how they can be actively involved in living as sustainably as possible
Implementation
To support the Parkwood’s consistent and ambitious geography curriculum, the Rising Stars scheme of work is used throughout KS1 and KS2. Rising Star encourages the exploration of geographical topics through engaging enquiry questions that stimulate the interests and intellect of all learners. Resources and lessons provided are adapted by the class teacher to meet needs of the pupils in each class. In EYFS Development Matters curriculum is utilised to introduce vocabulary and concepts relating to the children’s physical world and community. Across school, pupils have access to a wide range of geographical resources including globes, atlases as well as maps and aerial photographs to the local area which supports children’s understanding of their local community. Parkwood’s diverse staff provide insight and experience that enhance children’s understanding of their locality as well as changes that have happened over time.
