P.E & Sport
Aims
At Parkwood, high-quality physical education is an entitlement for all pupils. Our curriculum intends to develop their knowledge of motor competence, rules, strategies, tactics, and healthy participation. We aim to inspire everyone to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. These include: dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. It is important that physical education at Parkwood encourages children to think about their bodies in action and ensures they make informed decisions about healthy lifestyles.
Intent
The PE Curriculum at Parkwood supports pupils:
-
To master movements such as running, jumping, throwing and catching
-
To develop balance, agility, co-ordination, flexibility, strength, technique and control and apply these in a variety of activities
-
To perform dances using a range of movement patterns
-
To play competitive games and understand the principles of attack and defence
-
Compare their own and others’ performances and think critically about how to improve
-
To encourage children to be proactive in adopting an active lifestyle and understand the benefits it provides
Implementation
At Parkwood, our PE lessons are delivered by specialist coaches from Fisical, as well as class teachers. In EYFS, children begin to improve their movement skills; teachers begin to develop their agility, balance and coordination. PE sessions are taught every week and follow a curriculum that is mapped out so that children have opportunities to experience a broad range of different sports, as well as develop key skills to prepare them for KS3 and beyond. At Parkwood, we use the outdoors as much as possible especially in the younger year groups. Other team skills and adventurous activities are developed on residentials for our KS2 pupils, as well as other exciting trips eg. a visit to Doe Park water and adventure centre. Our swimming curriculum is delivered by trained professionals at the local pool, where swimming instructors follow the expectations as laid out in the National Curriculum (to swim 25 metres confidently in a range of strokes). At Parkwood, PE is a vehicle for children to further develop our ‘Characteristics of Effective Learners’, namely co-operation and resilience.
