Music
Aims
Music teaching at Parkwood Primary School aims to follow the specifications of the National Curriculum; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum. This ensures the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills. At Parkwood, we believe that music plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. Expanding the children’s musical palettes to a wider range of musical experiences, cultures and time periods is central to our curriculum and this will inform their music preferences currently and into the future. We aim to develop a passion for music, in which pupils learn to appreciate and develop a life-long love of music.
Intent
Our curriculum will support pupils to:
-
Enjoy and have an appreciation for music.
-
Listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, cultures, styles and traditions.
-
Sing and use their voices to create different effects.
-
Create and compose music, both on their own and with others.
-
Use a range of musical language.
-
Make judgements and express personal preferences about the quality and style of music.
-
Take part in performances with an awareness of audience.
-
Learn new instruments example recorder, ukulele, glockenspiel
Implementation
In Early Years, there is a focus on sounds and music exploration. Singing and rhymes support both children’s language development and awareness of pitch, melody and simple dynamics. The use of the Charanga music scheme enhances their Music experience here. KS1 and KS2 classes receive curriculum teaching provided by Bradford Music Service which ensures our pupils have specialist teachers delivering the curriculum. Where possible, links to the curriculum theme will be made. There is a clear breakdown and progression of skills required in the National Curriculum and these are taught in each year group. Through assemblies and key stage performances to parents and carers, children showcase their talent and their understanding of performing with awareness of others.
