Religious Education
Aims
At Parkwood Primary school, we aim to develop the children’s understanding of different faiths, traditions and beliefs. Cultivating an appreciation and respect for worldwide religions, while exploring their commonality and diversity, is central to our religious education curriculum. It is important that our pupils learn to discuss and explore different ethical questions while gaining an understanding of what is right and wrong. Our curriculum follows the locally agreed Bradford syllabus (Believing and Belonging 2024) which provides a comprehensive and stimulating framework of learning for all year groups from EYFS to Year 6. This RE syllabus aims to systematically teach the pupils the substantive RE knowledge they need to navigate spiritually through a world with diverse religions as well as non-beliefs.
Intent
Our curriculum will:
-
develop a broad and balanced understanding of religions and worldviews
-
empower learners to develop critical thinking skills
-
broaden perspectives of faiths and cultures, encouraging tolerance of diversity
-
develop their own personal worldview, identity, values and spirituality
-
contribute to developing learners as positive, participating citizens of the world
The Bradford Syllabus is built on 6 principles or pathways which is integrated into our teaching and learning in RE.

Implementation
We have decided to implement the Jigsaw RE scheme, as it provides full coverage of the religious education curriculum from Early Years up to Year 6. It is an enquiry led approach with an overarching question to explore each half term; lessons within each unit are adapted to meet the needs of the pupils. We are assured that we are delivering a complete and coherent curriculum which helps young minds build awareness of the world around them and it develops their broader, personal, social and emotional skills.
