Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE)

Aims

At Parkwood, our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives. In line with the 2020 statutory guidance for PSHE education, our aim is to provide a high quality PSHE programme which equips children with the knowledge of how to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life.

Intent

  • The PSHE curriculum provides for pupils’ broader development, including enhancing pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

  • Pupils are supported to be confident, resilient and independent, and to develop strength of character.

  • Pupils know how to eat healthily, maintain an active lifestyle and keep physically and mentally healthy, this includes developing healthy relationships.

  • Pupils engage with views, beliefs and opinions that are different from their own in considered ways. They show respect for the different protected characteristics.

  • The curriculum provides pupils with meaningful opportunities to understand how to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society.

  • The curriculum allows children to reflect on their aspirations but also supports them in overcoming challenges along the way.

  • PSHE works alongside the safeguarding policy children in keeping children safe for example naming scientific body parts, understanding online safety etc.

Implementation

We use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, which is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning from Nursery to Year 6. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate. The lessons are designed to create an inclusive and safe learning environment where everyone is included and respected. Class teachers adapt the lessons and resources provided to meet the needs of the pupils in our classrooms. Every lesson has two learning objectives, one that is specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy. Children are assessed against Jigsaw’s Attainment descriptors in each Puzzle which supports teachers in planning future sessions.

Impact

Assessment in Jigsaw is both formative and summative. The two clear learning objectives for each lesson allow the teacher to be mindful of the assessment elements within that session. There is the opportunity to self-assess using simple child friendly pictorial resources and for children aged 6 and over the opportunity to identify areas for self-improvement. As Jigsaw is a whole school approach, there a numerous layers built in that engender a sense of belonging and community, and that value every individual.
